Rugs of the Caucasus
Caucasia, the land which lies between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea—where legend has it, is, 'The Valley of the Golden Fleece', live many different peoples, Georgians, Tartars, Cossacks, Circassians and Armenians, all with their own culture and religions. From time to time, one reads about the long-lived Caucasians—a place where many men live to over a hundred and some to 160 years of age.
The Caucasus mountains practically stretch across the width of the country, and the lower slopes are ideal for sheep rearing.
Their rug designs are geometrical as the mountain slopes which are about them, powerful, magnificent and yet a picture of tranquillity. Each people having its own particular type of geometrical design.
