Afghan rugs: about
area rug
The use of camel hair is not unusual, on close inspection the fields of many beige ground rugs are found to be of camel hair.
The Persian knot is the most common used, but it is not unusual to find a rug woven with a Turkish knot.
The design is made up of octagonal medallions (guls), each tribe having its own particular shape.
The Afghan is nearly always a true octagonal, the sides being squared off, unlike the Turkoman which have curved sides or pieces protruding from their guls. The guls in the Afghan are not joined, like most of the Bokharas which use a thin blue line.
